skandha

2024

‘skandha’ is a solo piano project that delves into the realms of Eastern philosophy, drawing particular inspiration from Buddhist concepts. Divided into five distinct parts, each corresponding to one of the ”five aggregates,“ it explores the interconnectedness of fundamental aspects of existence—form, feeling, cognition, life force, and consciousness.

《色》 (Rūpa): Delving into the inseparable relationship between form and emptiness, "Skandha" opens with a contemplative exploration of how form itself embodies emptiness, and emptiness manifests as form.

《受》 (Vedanā): The second segment explores the harmonious coexistence of feelings and emptiness, emphasizing that feeling is, at its core, emptiness, and emptiness is the essence of feeling.

《想》 (Saṃjñā): Cognition takes center stage in this part, with a reflection on past, present, and future. The project posits that cognition is intricately entwined with emptiness, and emptiness is an inherent part of cognition.

《行》 (Saṃskāra): Turning the focus to life forces in motion, this part explores how formation and emptiness are inextricably linked. Formation is emptiness, and emptiness is formation, creating a dynamic and harmonious narrative.

《識》 (Vijñāna): The project concludes by delving into the consciousness of life, self, and ego. It reiterates the core theme that consciousness is not separate from emptiness, and emptiness is an integral part of consciousness.

Finale.
Reaching a profound reflection on detachment and impermanence. The project's culmination, encapsulated in the phrase "Gone with the attachments, not persevering, not welcoming, it goes and gone," leaves a lingering resonance, inviting contemplation on the transient nature of existence.

"Skandha" is more than a musical endeavor; it's a philosophical journey that invites audiences to explore the interconnected tapestry of life, guided by the wisdom of Eastern philosophy and the evocative language of solo piano.
